  <dc:description>Formal command issued by Newcastle to his cousin John Duke of Montagu, Master General of the Ordnance. By command of the King and on the advice of the principal officers of the Ordnance, Newcastle directs Montagu to appoint a master and assistants for a new academy to teach mathematics in the service of naval artillery and engineering at Woolwich Warren [Royal Military Academy, Woolwich]. Also directs Montagu to prescribe rules to govern the academy and to provide instruments and books up to a cost of £500 per annum to be funded and audited by the treasury of the Ordnance.</dc:description>
