Diary kept during the Royal Society Expedition to Southern Chile, by Martin Holdgate Description of expedition activities in Chile, South America, commencing [p.3] on Wednesday 1 October 1958: 'Awakened by growing light to note overcast sky...', and continuing with daily entries, occasionally illustrated with sketches. The diary ends [p.161] on Saturday 24 January 1959, which is dated, but with no content. The volume has occasional notes [pp.169-184 and inner rear board] including Chilean family trees, and copies of the text of expedition telegrams. The diary is prefaced by a later note: 'This diary begins at Puerto Montt where we stayed awaiting transport by the F.A.C.L. (Fuerto Aerea de Chile) to Chepa on Chiloe. I kept it over the period of the Expedition until 24 January 1959 when for some reason I stopped. A pity because it meant that I had no record of a visit we paid to the world's southernmost sheep farm on Isla Bertrand, south of Isla Naverino...'. Signed by Martin Holdgate, 26 April 2024.
