Shackleton Papers Nicholas John Shackleton was an English geologist and paleoclimatologist. His research identified the precise role of carbon dioxide in warming and cooling the Earth's climate, contributing greatly to our understanding of the mechanism and causes of global warming. Shackleton studied geology at Cambridge, graduating in 1961. His PhD at Cambridge was awarded in 1967, on the study of measuring ancient temperatures in fossils from the use of oxygen isotopes. In 1965 he was appointed senior assistant in research at Cambridge University. In 1972 he became assistant director of research in the department of quaternary research at Cambridge. In 1995, he was appointed director of the Goodwin Institute of Quaternary Research, Cambridge. He retired in 2004. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1985. 1960-2006
