<dc:title>Press cuttings relating to the Royal Society: biographical</dc:title>
<dc:description>Press cuttings and other printed information concerning the Royal Society's Fellows. Compiled by the organisation's staff. Cuttings include obituary notices of Fellows of the Royal Society, notably Richard Owen (pp.6-9) with memorials (pp.16-18); Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby (pp.26-27); John Rae (pp.31-33); Andrew Clark (pp.45-48); John Tyndall (pp.48-50), the latter with 'The Times' account of Louisia Tyndall's inquest testimony on the manner of his death. Other topics include the seventieth birthday of Louis Pasteur (pp.9-10); sea serpents (p.12); Rudolf Virchow in London (pp.22-24). There is extensive coverage of the High Court of Justice hearing of Nobel's Explosives Company Limited vs. Anderson (the Cordite case) (pp.55-61). The book contains some ephemera, including a circular letter on the Rae Memorial at Kirkwall (p.36). There are notices of university intelligence and various honours given to Fellows. Some letters to editors are present. A manuscript index appears at the end of the volume.

Generally, the cuttings are attributed to the source newspaper and dated in manuscript. The volume contains many blank pages - most cuttings have been pasted to the recto side only and the original manuscript pagination omits the blank verso pages. A paper label on the cover is inscribed: 'Royal Society Biographical Scrap-Book. Oct. 24, 1892 to May 8, 1894. Indexed.' </dc:description>
