Referee's report by William Napier Shaw, on a paper 'On the conditions which render absolute the readings of the mercurial thermometer absolute' by Sidney A Sworn Recommended for publication in Proceedings, but it is not suitable for Philosophical Transactions. The observations are acute and careful, but there is too much detailed information about the instruments. The gist of the paper 'could have been expressed with much greater brevity'.
