Referee's report by James Joseph Sylvester, on a paper 'On the calculus of functions' by William Henry Leighton Russell Referee has doubts about whether the paper should be published in Philosophical Transactions. He is inclined to believe that the paper would be better suited to a mathematical journal. Although, since Arthur Cayley is involved with the paper, the referee thinks this must make it suitable for publication, as he holds Cayley's opinion in high regard.
