<dc:title>Referee's report by Warington Wilkinson Smyth, on a paper 'Notes on the chemical geology of the gold-fields of California' by John Arthur Phillips</dc:title>
<dc:description>Not recommended for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. The paper is largely a copy of an earlier publication by the same author, entitled 'Mining and metallurgy of gold and silver' in 1867. The geological research was completed as part of a State survey under Josiah Dwight Whitney, and published as part of his report. The microscopical work is of 'doubtful value'. Some descriptions are taken word-for-word from previous publications and the work of R Oxland. Refers to work of Law [?], Moreau [?] Bull [?], Baron von Beust [Count Friedrich Ferdinand von Beust?] and Bischof of Bonn [Karl Gustav Bischof?]. Suggests the paper be referred to David Forbes who has more expertise in microscopical work.
