<dc:title>Referee's report by Alan Sterling Parkes, on a paper 'The lactation cycle of elephantulus myurus jamesoni (Chubb)' by Muriel J McKerrow</dc:title>
  <dc:description>Sectional committee: Physiology

Paper reference code: B24

Recommended for publication in the Philosophical Transactions. Parkes writes: 'This paper is based entirely on field material and, as the author says, several important stages are missing there is no information about time relations. In my opinion the material does not justify the length at which it is described. Trivial detail could well be omitted and in particular the paper could be shortened by reference to better-known animals with similar sequences of events. Thus the effect on the mammary cycle of the occurrence of post partum oestrus and thence of consecutive pregnancies is not peculiar to Elephantulus (it occurs typically in the laboratory rat) and does not justify the somewhat naive description given on pages 2 and 3.'
