Organic chemist and biochemist Chemistry Organic chemistry Education: Würzburg PhD; Manchester University 1894–5 Career: Military service; went to Geneva to work with Carl Graebe; enrolled at Manchester University; joined Philip Schidrowitz in a practice as analytical and consulting chemists in London (1896); naturalized ctizen (1900); research student of pharmacological chemistry at King's College, London (1901); lecturer in chemical physiology (1905); reader in biochemistry (1915); worked at the National Institute for Medical Research, Hampstead (1920-1942). Memberships: One of the original members of the Biochemical Society FLS Medical Research Council Parents: Meier Rosenheim and Adelheid. Spouse: (m. 26 July 1910) Mary Christine (1868–1953), daughter of William Tebb of Rede Hall, Burstow. Distinguished for his investigation into the chemical nature of substances of physiological importance. His work on Sphingomyelin and the Galactosides of the brain is recognized to be definitive. He discovered simultaneously with others, but independently, the effect of irradiation upon cholesterol. With Dudley he has established the chemical nature of spermine and effected its synthesis.
