Zoologist Biology Embryology Zoology Morphology Education: Johns Hopkins University; MA (Camb); McGill University MD (Montreal) 1901 Career: Worked at the biological laboratory at McGill in close collaboration with Ernest William MacBride (FRS 1905) (1901); worked at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Naples, Italy (1903-1909); lecturer in experimental embryology, Cambridge (1910-1914); helped troops at Davenport military hospital (1914-1918); returned to Cambridge and transferred from the Zoology to the Department of Anatomy where embryology was a relatively new subject (1918); retired but continued to the Zoology Department to undertake further research (1937); died suddenly. Niece: Norma Shearer (1902-1983), actress. Spouse: (m. 1917) Amy Hext (1890-1973). Children: Two sons. Distinguished for his work on the Comparative Morphology of Invertebrates and on the Mechanics of Development.
