Zoologist; Museum Director Ichthyology Zoology Education: Derby School; MA (Camb) Career: Assistant in the British Museum (Natural History), assisting George Albert Boulenger in curating the collection of fishes (1901); keeper of the department of zoology, Natural History Museum (1921); director of the museum (1927-138). Memberships: British Association Awards/Medals: Hhonorary fellow of Queens' College, Cambridge 1928 Parents: Charles James Regan, music master at Sherborne School, and Maria Jane, daughter of William Tate, author. Spouse: (m. 12 July 1905) Elsie Alice (b. 1882), daughter of George Marlow, land surveyor. Children: Two daughters and two sons. Distinguished for his contribution to Ichthyology, on which he has published many important works, referring to morphology, classific and geographical distribution. Described the complex copulatory organs of the tiny East Indian Phallostethid fishes. Remembered for his comprehensive fish classification schemes, having defined and surveyed forty orders of fishes. He was the first, in 1925, to recognise the parasitic dwarf males in certain deep-sea angler-fishes.
