metallurgist Chemistry Metallurgy Education: St Paul's School; Eastbourne College; MA (Oxon); Phd (Leip) Career: Employed at Owens College, Manchester (1896); head of the new departments of chemistry and metallurgy at the National Physical Laboratory (1901); chair of metallurgy at the University of Manchester (1906); chair of metallurgy at the Royal School of Mines, South Kensington (1913); played a crucial role in founding the Institute of Metals (1929); wrote extensively, in collaboration with Jon Montath Robertson (1939); died of heart failure whilst on a country walk (1940). Honours: Kt 1929 Memberships: ARSM Iron and Steel Institute (President 1935–1937) Institution of Mining and Metallurgy Awards/Medals: Bessemer Gold Medal 1931 Parents: William Lant Carpenter, engineer, of Bristol, and Annie Grace Viret. Grandfather: William Benjamin Carpenter (FRS 1844). Spouse: Ethel Mary, daughter of George Henry Lomas, of Brooklands, Cheshire (1905). Specialist on steels. Remembered for his studies on the crystallisation of metals.
