chemist and fuel technologist Metallurgy Organic chemistry Chemistry Education: Middlesbrough High School; Friends' School, Ackworth; Stockton High School; Leys School, Cambridge; Owens College in the Victoria University, Manchester DSc (Vict); MD (Heidel) Career: Worked in Harold Baily Dixson’s laboratory at Victoria University (1891); won a scholarship at Victor Meyer’s Laboratory at Heidelberg, and worked there on indoxazen derivatives (1892-1893); returned to England and worked at the Battersea Polytechnic, later becoming head of the chemistry department (1896-1898); lecturer in chemistry and metallurgy at Owens College (1898); continued research in organic chemistry; professor of fuel and metallurgy (1906); first Livesey professor of coal, gas, and fuel industries at the University of Leeds (1910); established a department of fuel technology at the Royal College of Science, South Kensington, and became professor of chemical technology in the University of London (1912); researched fuel problems associated with the war and trained chemists for duties in munitio factories (1914-1918); retired (1936). Parents: Christopher Bone, tea merchant, of Stockton, and Mary Elizabeth Hutchinson. Spouse: 1) Kate (d. 1914), daughter of Richard Hind, JP, who was twice mayor of Stockton (1893) 2) Mabel Isabel (d. 1922), daughter of John Edward Liddiard, civil engineer, of Swindon (1916).
