Chemist and director of the Imperial Institute Pharmaceutical chemistry Chemistry Education: Bedford School and abroad; MA Career: Appointed assistant to Theophilus Redwood, professor of chemistry in the Pharmaceutical Society's School of Pharmacy (1879); demonstrator in the University of Oxford's chemical laboratories (1884); university lecturer on chemistry in relation to medicine (1885); succeeded Redwood (1886); lecturer on chemistry in St Thomas's Hospital medical school (1892-1900); director of the scientific and technical department of the Imperial Institute (1896); succeeding Sir Frederick Augustus Abel (FRS 1860) as its director (1903-1924); retired (1924). Honours: CMG 1913; KCMG 1924 Parents: John Dunstan, constable and governor of Chester Castle, and Catherine, daughter of (Philip) Cipriani Hambley Potter, principal of the Royal Academy of Music. Spouse: 1) Emilie Fordyce Maclean, who died in 1893 (7 August 1886) 2) Violet Mary Claudia Hanbury-Tracy (14 August 1900). Children: Son and a daughter from his first marriage; one daughter from second marriage. Remembered as an excellent teacher.
