Surveyor; Geographer Surveying Geography Geodesy Education: Dame-school, Rochester; Thompson's school, Jersey; Royal Military Academy, Woolwich; School of Military Engineering, Chatham Career: Served a year in Gibraltar (1886); attached to and later commanded the balloon section at Chatham (1887-8); posted to India serving on battery construction for the Hooghly defences, surveying India (1889-93), followed by topographic work in Burma, and geodetic triangulation in Mandalay; returned to Chatham; sent to west Africa to survey the boundary between the Niger Coast Protectorate and the German Cameroons (1895); appointed to the Ordnance Survey (1898); appointed CMG (1899); promoted to major (1901); lieutenant-colonel (1908); colonel (1912); led a survey detachment for the South African War; chief instructor in surveying in Chatham (1902-5); Director General of the Ordnance Survey (1911-1922) ; retired (1922); changed his surname to Arden-Close by deed poll to comply with the terms of a bequest (1938).
