Career: Entered the navy (1868); sub-lieutenant (1874); lieutenant specialising in navigation (1877); partook in the Anglo-Zulu War (1879); commander (1890); appointed to command the Defiance (1895); appointed naval attaché in Paris (1897); assistant director of torpedoes at the Admiralty (1902); third sea lord and controller of the navy (1905); aide-de-camp to Edward VII (1905-1906); rear-admiral (1906); Command of 3rd cruiser squadron in the Mediterranean (1908-1910); vice-admiral (1911); chief of the war staff (1913); Admiral (1914); admiral of the fleet (1919); chairman of the Radio Research Board (1920); retired from the navy (1924). Honours: KCVO 1906; KCB 1910; GCB 1916 Parents: Henry Jackson, a farmer in nearby Cudworth, and Jane, the daughter of Charles Tee of Barnsley. Spouse: Alice Mary Florence, eldest daughter of Samuel Hawksley Burbury FRS, barrister and mathematician. Proposed using electromagnetic waves to detect torpedo boats. Pioneer of ship-to-ship wireless technology.
