Smith was left money by the Dublin Philosophical Society's founder William Molyneux (FRS 1686), along with John Locke (FRS 1668) and St George Ashe (FRS 1686). Despite being appointed lecturer in mathematics at Trinity, his writings were mostly concerned with natural history and Turkish culture.
