Memberships: FSA Parents: Ebenezer Maitland (1752 - 1834), London West India merchant and partner in Maitland, Bond and Ede, and Mary Winter, daughter of John Winter. Spouse: Bethia Ellis,daughter of Joshua Ellis and Esther Ellis (m. 9 December 1800). Children: 12 children, including William Fuller Maitland (1813-1876), picture collector. Legally changed his name to Ebenezer Fuller Maitland by Royal Licence, at request of Sarah Fuller, his wife's aunt, on 20 November 1807. The South Sea Company, of which he was director, was a public and private partnership that was designed as a way of consolidating, controlling and reducing the national debt and to help Britain increase its trade and profits in the Americas. To enable this, in 1713 it was granted a trading monopoly in the region. Part of this was the asiento, which allowed for the trading of enslaved African persons to the Spanish and Portuguese Empires.
