Engineer Engineering Education: cience Schoolsof South Kensington; Whitworth Scholarship; Hon MA (Camb) Career: Began working at the Stratford Locomotive Works of the Great Eastern Railway (1876); worked at Crewe Works of the London and North Western Railway as Chief Assistant in the Permanent Way Department (1884); appointed to assist Sir Alfred Ewing (FRS 1887) in setting up an Engineering Department at Cambridge University (1891); demonstrated a model designed to illustrate the balancing of locomotives to the Institution of Civil Engineers (1898); became Professor of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the City and Guilds of London Institute Central Technical College upon the retirement of William Cawthorne Unwin (FRS 1886) (1904); became Dean of the College (1906); engaged on confidential work with the War Office, Admiralty, Air Board, and was consulting engineer to the Admiralty Research Laboratory. Memberships: Inst C.E. Distinguished for his scientific investigations of engineering subjects, especially the action of internal combustion motors and the dynamics of engines. Has made a special study of the balancing of engines, in which he introduced a vector method of great convenience, and has exhaustively treated the subject in his 'Treatise on the Balancing of Engines' (1902), based on methods published by him in earlier papers.
