Paper manufacturer Geology Archaeology Palaeontology Numismatics Career: Entered paper manufactory business of John Dickinson & Co, of Nash Mills, Hemel Hempstead; partner (1850-1885); studied and made personal collections in geology, archaeology and paleaontology, his meticulous research particularly focused on prehistoric flint implements, but his initial training derived from the Iron Age and Roman coinage as well as geology ; placed the study of numismatics on a scientific basis; became famous for his synthesis of the Palaeolithic finds from France and England published in 1859-1860; one of the earliest men of commerce to become an appreciated member of several learned societies in London and elsewhere, and often also entrusted with high-ranking offices; deeply invovled in international work within learned societies, especially the international congresses of prehistoric archaeology; mastered French, German, and Nordic languages; an expert on water percolation through his business interests; trustee of the British Museum, with which he was heavily involved, as well as the Blackmore Nuseum and St Albans Museum; died after an operation Honours: KCB 1892 Memberships: FGS; FSA; AICE; FNS; Corresponding Member, Society d'Emulation d'Abbeville; Archaeological Society, Luxembourg Second son of Arthur Benoni Evans and his wife Anne, daughter of Captain Thomas Dickinson RN of Bramblebury near Woolwich; grandson of Lewis Evans (FRS 1823); nephew of John Dickinson (FRS 1845); married (1850) Harriet Ann, daughter of John Dickinson (FRS 1845); father of Arthur John Evans (FRS 1901) Through his son, Sir Arthur Evans, the bulk of his collections went to the Ashmolaeum Museum.
