Engineer Kinematics Aerodynamics Engineering Education: Atherstone Grammar School; Owens College, Manchester 1888; Whitworth Laboratory; DSc (Vict) 1891 Career: Worked at Reynolds' laboratory as a Junior and later as Senior Demonstrator (1891-1896); resident tutor in mathematics and engineering at the Hulme Hall of Residence, Manchester (1892-1896); Senior Assistant Lecturer in Engineering at University College, Liverpool (1896); Professor of Engineering at Bristol University College (1899); Superintendent of the Engineering Department of the National Physical Laboratory, Bristol (1901-1930). Honours: CBE 1920; Kt 1928 Parents: Thomas Stanton, plumber and glazier and Mary Ann Wagstaff. Studied fluid flow and friction, and the related problem of heat transmission.. Involved with aerodynamics from the early years of airplane development. Investigated wind velocity; wind pressure on structures; and the effects of alternating stress on materials of construction. The successful development of the Engineering Department of the National Physical Laboratory is largely due to him.
