physiologist Medicine Physiology Education: early education at Haileybury College; University College, London (MB 1890) Career: Embarked upon an academic career in physiology, with a Sharpey scholarship to University College, under Professor Edward Albert Schafer (FRS 1878), during which time he worked in collaboration with John Rose Bradford (FRS 1894) and William Bayliss (FRS 1903); studied intra-cranial pressure, blood flow in the brain, and effects of gravity on general circulation; appointed lecturer on physiology at the London Hospital (1895), later professor (1912); appointed head of the department of applied physiology in the projected National Institute for Medical Research (1914); engaged in a range of research, with the department, attempting to determine the significance of fresh air and sun exposure in promoting general health (1914-1930). Honours: Kt 1930 Memberships: Fellow of University College, London Awards/Medals: Honorary LLD from the University of Aberdeen. Honorary ARIBA. Institution of Mining Engineers gold medal. Harben Medal Sidey Medal Parents: George Birkbeck Norman Hill (1835–1903) and Annie (1837/8–1902), daughter of Edward Scott.
