Embryologist Histology Zoology Embryology Education: Village school, Kennoway; Royal High School, Edinburgh; Heriot Watt College; DSc (Edin) Career: Junior demonstrator in zoology and botany, Edinburgh (1891); sailed to Australia (1892); studied platypus and marsupials; assistant to the Professor of Biology in the University of Sydney (1892-1906); returned to England and UCL as the Jodrell Chair of Zoology [now the Grant Museum of Zoology] (1906); first Chair of Embryology and Histology at UCL (1921); retired (1938) but continued working until his death. Memberships: FLS; FZS Awards/Medals: Mueller Medal 1907 Linnean Medal 1930 Parents: John Hill, of Langside, and Catherine Campbell Mclnroy. Spouse: (m. 6 January 1900) Marjorie, eldest daughter of J. Steele, C.B., J.P., Chief Inspectorof Inland Revenue. Children: Katherine Jones Hill; one other daughter; his son died in Sarawak in 1935. Co-discoverer of the existence of the complete successional dentition in rudimentary form in Marsupials, also the discoverer of a well-developed placenta in certain Marsupials, thus upsetting previous conceptions.
