Lawrence Brodrick, chaplain to the House of Commons, widow of Dr William Whitfield; brother of Allen Bathurst, 1st Baron Bathurst Benjamin Bathurst's father, Sir Benjamin Bathurst, was a deputy-governor of the Royal Africa Company in 1680–82 and a sub-governor in 1682–4, 1685-6 and 1689–90. The Royal Adventurers into Africa, later Royal African Company (RAC). The RAC was a British trading company established by Royal Charter in 1660 which enslaved and sold African people. The family wealth was built on investments in the slave trade and this wealth was the origin of the estates of Lydney and Mixbury which he gifted to his son, Benjamin Bathurst FRS, on his death.
