physician Medicine Education: Montpellier University (1729) Career: Attempted and failed to secure the succession to the chair of medicine at Montpellier (1732); moved to Paris to continue his medical studies (1735); became doctor of the Paris faculty (1742); professor of surgery in the Latin language, Paris (1750); professor of surgery in the French language, Paris (1760); professor of pharmacy (1762). Children: Andrew Samuel Michael Cantwell (1744–1802), librarian and translator in France. Strong opponent of inoculation against smallpox, attacking the practice in two published works: Dissertation sur l'inoculation (1755) and Tableau de la petite vérole (1758).
