Biologist Biology Cell biology Education: Wembley county school (1928); University College, London; Commonwealth Fund fellowship at Princeton University (1933–5) Career: Returned to University College, London, to further research the problems of membrane permeability and function (1935); moved to Cambridge University to work on oedema (1938); participated in defence research on wound healing and antidote to the chemical warfare poison Lewisite (1939-1945); reader in cell physiology at the Royal Cancer Hospital, London (1946); professor of zoology at King's College, London, where he widened the scope of departmental research (1949); chairman of the department of biological pharmacology, University of Buffalo (1962); then director of the university's new interdisciplinary centre for theoretical biology (1965); chairman of life sciences at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts (1974); retired (1980) Parents: James Frederic Danielli, civil servant, and Helena Mary Hollins. Spouse: (m. 1937) Mary Guy, poet and anthropologist, daughter of Herbert Spencer Guy, accountant. Children: One daughter and one son. Noted for his his investigation on the structure and permeability of cell membranes and his critical examination and further development of cytochemical methods applied to the study of localisation of alkaline phosphatases in tissues of vertebrates and invertebrates in relation to their secretory activity. His study of the functional relationship between the nucleus and cytoplasm of cells, carried out by methods of enucleation and cross transfer of nuclei in Amoeba proteus and Amoeba discoides, has direct bearing upon the problem of cell differentiation. His work on anti-cancer agents was stimulus to others.
