Clergyman Structural mechanics Mechanics Mathematics Education: Grammar school in Newcastle under Lyme; School in Abbeville, France; Naval school in Portsmouth (1818); St John's College, Cambridge (BA 1826; MA 1836). Career: Ordained deacon (1827); ordained priest becoming curate at West Monkton, Taunton (1828); produced his first book “A Treatise on Hydrostatics” (1830); Professor of natural and experimental philosophy and astronomy at King’s College, London, where his efforts were crucial in establishing the practical science and engineering department (1831-1884); appointed as her majesty’s inspector of normal schools (1844); concurrently chaplain of King’s College (1831-1833); residential canonry in Bristol Cathedral (1853); vicar of Olveston, Gloucestershire (1854); chaplain in ordinary to Queen Victoria (1855); active in the promotion of working-class education and advocated the development of middle schools to be established on a scientific, rather than literary basis (c1860s). Noted for his contribtions to the theory of arches and energy concepts in mechanics. Investigated statics of masonry arches.
