Astronomy Physics Mathematics Career: Designed apparatus of mercury barometer in a vacuum (1647); worked for clergymen or noblemen, for example in managing their estates (1640s); wrote to King Louis XIV about the need for a public observatory (1664); made astronomical observations from Jean-Baptiste Colbert's residence in Paris (1666); Memberships: Academie Royale des Sciences (Original Member) Parents: Adrian Auzout and Jeanne Piedelièvre After leaving Rouen, Auzout became a member of the circle of French mathematician Marin Mersenne, who was also a correspondent to Fellows such as Samuel Sorbiere (FRS 1663) or Theodore Haak (FRS 1663). The group of natural philosophers who gathered at Colbert's residence for astronomical observations can be seen as a precursor to the Académie des Sciences. He was involved in some academic disputes with both Hevelius (FRS 1663) on comet predictions and William Petty (FRS 1663) on ancient architecture and statistics.
