Physician Education: Clerk of New College, Oxford (1622); St Edmund's Hall, Oxford (AB 1626; AM 1629; MB 1629; MD 1637) Career: Practiced in and around Oxford; moved to London with the Court; Physician to Charterhouse; Physician to Oliver Cromwell and Charles II; co-authored medical books 'De Rachitide' (1650) by Francis Glisson (FRS 1661) and posthumously 'Pharmacopeia Bateana' (1690) Memberships: Fellow of the College of Physicians (1640) Parents: John Bate Married: Elizabeth Bate His medical practice, which he primarily did out of Oxford, became less successful during the late 1630s with the simultaneous decline of the King's popularity and the impending Civil War. No matter who was in power, Bate aimed to be chief state physician. In a political work attributed to him, Bate wrote a defense of Charles I.
