Career:
Joined the Geological Survey working in East Anglia and Lincolnshire (1874-1883); physical demands of geological surveying impacted his health forcing him to retire for a time; took up field work for the study of the fossils of chalk deposits, exploring details of classification of English chalk strata over nine years the Cretaceous areas of the south and west of England, eventually resulting in the publication of three volumes of Survey Memoirs; worked in Barbados and in conjunction with Professor J.B Harrison, described the upraised oceanic deposits in that island; wrote three geological textbooks and “The Building of the British Isles”; retired from the Geological Survey due to ill health (1902).
