zoologist Zoology Biology Education: Owens College, Victoria University, Manchester (M.Sc., 1887; D.Sc., 1891) Career: Joined editorial staff in compiling reports of the Challenger, including monaxonid sponges (1885); employed to the British Museum, Natural History (1886); demonstrator and assistant lecturer at the University of Melbourne (1888); identified and described almost two thousand specimens of sponges as part of the Por Phillip Biological Survey by the Royal Society of Victori (1887); professor of biology at Canterbury College, University of New Zealand (1893); professor of biology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa (1903); professor of zoology at King’s College, London (1905); died following an operation for chronic appendicitis (1925). Memberships: Hon RSNZ (1907) Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science The Royal Society of Victoria Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria Parents: John Dendy, silk manufacturer, and Sarah, née Beard. Spouse: Ada Margaret Courtauld (5 December 1888 ). Children: Three daughters, one son. Became world authority on phylum Porifera. The first to carry out systematic research on on the cryptic terrestrial invertebrate fauna of Victoria. Cointed the term cryptozoa.
