Natural historian Zoology Botany Natural history Education: Uppsala University, Sweden Career: Studied under Carl Linnaeus (FRS 1753); visited the northern shores of the Gulf of Bothnia to study the unusual flora of the Piteå and Torneå districts, returning with collections which were preserved in the Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm (1753-1755); went to London (1760); Assistant Librarian, British Museum; introduced Linnaean system of classification to English botanists; scientific assistant to Sir Joseph Banks (FRS 1766) and went on James Cook's first voyage (1768); Secretary and Librarian to Sir Joseph Banks; went to Iceland with Banks (1772); Keeper, Department of Natural History, British Museum (1773). Parents: Carl Solander (1699–1760), Lutheran clergyman, and Magdalena Bostadia (1713–1789), the daughter of a high-ranking official in Västerbotten. Siblings: Anna Magdalena. Remembered for his systematic description and classification.
