Astronomer; Broadcaster Astronomy Career: Joined the Royal Air Force (aged 17); helped to run a school (after World War II); freelance writer and broadcaster; composer; piano player. Presenter of the BBC show 'The Sky at Night' since its first episode in April 1957, received a BAFTA award for his work on this programme. Helped update charts of the Moon after the Russians photographed the 'dark side', and helped map the moon for the American Apollo mission (1959). A prolific author mostly of non-fiction on the topic of astronomy, and some fiction aimed at children.
