Knight Physician Education: University College, Oxford (matriculated 15 May 1685); All Souls College (BA 1689); (MA 1693); (BM 1697); (DM 1701). Career: Physician extraordinary to Queen Anne (1709, sworn one of the physicians-in-ordinary 1712 ); George I and later to George II, who honoured him with a knighthood in 1715. Retired to France (1735-40). During his retirement to the continent, Shadwell witnessed the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, an account of which he supplied to the Royal Society (1737). Memberships: FRS (1701); FRCP (1712) Honours: Kt (1715) Parents: Thomas Shadwell (c. 1640–1692), poet laureate and historiographer, and Anne (neé Gibbs) (fl. 1661–1705). Spouse: Elizabeth (neé Coldwall) first marriage; Anna (neé Binns) second marriage (12 March 1725). Children: Eight sons and three daughters (Catherine, Molly), from first marriage. Fellow 03/12/1701 30 Elected a fellow of the Royal Society on 30 November 1701 and admitted on 3 December 1701.
