entomologist Organometallic chemistry Astronomy Chemistry Entomology Education: Privately tutored owing to a childhood accident which left him partially paralyzed; Royal College of Chemistry (1848). Career: Moved to London (1847); research assistant to Professor August Hofmann (FRS 1851) (1848); published papers on chemical topics, including the cyanide compounds and insecticides (1846-1865); studied parthenogenesis in aphids (1865); fractured his leg in two places while trying to reach the long focus of a Newtonian telescope (1882); died from a short illness (1905). Memberships: FCS; FLS Parents: George Buckton (1784–1847), proctor of the prerogative court of Canterbury, of Doctors' Commons and Oakfield, Hornsey, and Eliza (1786–1842), daughter of Richard Merricks of Runcton House, Mundham, Sussex. Spouse: (26 September 1865) Mary Ann (1831–1927), daughter of George Odling, medical practitioner, of Croydon and sister of Professor William Odling of Oxford. Children: One son, and five daughters, including Alice Mary Buckton (1867–1944), founder of the Chalice Well Trust at Glastonbury. Specialised in aphids. Known for his work in organometallic chemistry.
