Engineer Chemistry Invention Astronomy Education: Collège de Ste Barbe, Paris, France Career: Employed at his father’s firm of Thomas de la Rue and Co but pursued his interest in chemical and electrical research (1836-1848); went to Spain with the Himalays Expedition where he obtained a series of photographs of the total eclipse of the sun 18 July (1860); retired from the family business (1870); established a private physical laboratory, where in collaboration with Dr Hugo Muller, he carried out elaborate research on the electrical discharge (1874); member of the Consulting Council of the Electrical Exhibition held at the Crystal Palace, Sydenham (1882); died of pneumonia (1889). Memberships: FCS (President 1867-1869) RAS (President 1864-1866) Royal Institution (Secretary 1878) Awards/Medals: Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society 1862 Lalande Prize 1866 Parents: Thomas de la Rue (1793–1866), printer, and Jane Warren (1789–1858). Spouse: Georgiana (1819-1918) third daughter of Thomas Bowles of Guernsey (17 February 1840). Children: Four sons and one daughter. Remembered for his pioneering work in the application of photography to astronomical research. Created one of the world's first electric light bulbs in 1840. Patented inventions including processes for utilising earth oils and machinery for simplifying the making of writing materials. The crater De La Rue on the Moon is named in his honour.
