Courtier; Schoolmaster Career: Master of the Charterhouse (1677-1685); Cupbearer to Charles II Parents: John Erskine and Lady Mary Stewart Charterhouse developed a very good reputation for hospital care and treatment, and the institution further developed into a well-respected public school. The original bequest for the hospital's maintenance, from Thomas Sutton in 1611, secured care for male pensioners of certain backgrounds as well as the education of forty boys. The governing body of Charterhouse School kept a representative appointed by the Council of the Society well into the 20th century.
