Chemist Chemical synthesis Chemistry Education: University of London BSc (1949); Oxford University PhD (1951) Career: Moved to Canada to take up a position at the National Research Council in Ottawa (1951); carried out post-doctoral research at the University of British Columbia (1952-1955); returned to the NRC as a research officer (1955); promoted to head of the Free Radical Chemistry Section, NRC. Honours: OC 1994 Awards: Petroleum Chemistry Award 1968 Tory Medal 1985 Linus Pauling Award 1988 Memberships: FRSC FRSE Parents: Sir Christopher Ingold and Dr. Hilda Usherwood, both physical organic chemists. Spouse: Cairine Hodgkin. Made fundamental contributions to free radical chemistry. His work provided much of the foundation for the conversion of various industrial arts to exact and quantitative sciences. His approach was characterised by simple but ingenious experiments and an insistence on quantitative measurements. His later work was mainly concerned with uninhibited autoxidations, the mechanism of radical - radical reactions and the formation of novel types of long-lived free radicals.
