His father was imprisoned in the Tower London by the Parliamentarians from 1642 and 1660 for his support of the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud, and his stance against Puritans. His likely first appointment as a Rector in Essex coincides with the Restoration and additionally the restoration of episcopacy to the Anglican Church.
