During his life in France, he distanced himself from fellow royalists. As one of the original Fellows of the Royal Society, Hatton was interested in scientific and philosophical affairs, collected books and antiquities, and was a patron to and Sir William Dugdale, antiquary, and his clerk Gregory King, later genealogist and statistician.
