He worked with John Evelyn (FRS 1663) and Christopher Wren (FRS 1660) to examine proposals for the repairs on St Paul's Church in 1663, and also associated with Samuel Pepys. He continuously lived beyond his means and towards the end of his life was financially ruined, with a settlement with his creditors only being reached in court after Slingsby's death. As Secretary to the Council for Trade and Plantations, within the Board of Trade government body, Slingsby worked to further the government's colonial interest. In his post, he made £500 quarterly. The Council's orders and tasks fell within a broad remit and included finding ways in which to take and enslave people to bring to the colonies, mediating between the Royal African Company and the colonies, as well as enforcing the 'reeducation' of Native Americans and enslaved people in the colonised regions.
