He was dismissed from his role as sheriff of Longford and Westmeath for using lands intended for Catholics transplanted to Connaught. Later on, he attempted to get involved in Irish revenue farming, and although embroiled in accusations of corruption in which Shaen was conflict with Earl Ranelagh and the Earl of Danby, Shaen maintained control in the 1670s, although this collapsed in 1682.
