Politician; banker Education: Harrow School Career: Partner in the York banking house of Wentworth, Chaloner and Rishworth; MP for Richmond, Yorkshire (1810-1818), York (1820-1826); Lord Mayor of York (1817); North West Riding yeomanry, Cornet later Captain (1798); Major, Cleveland Volunteers (1803); Major, North Riding militia (1808); land agent for Coolattin estate in Ireland, the property of his wife's cousin, the Earl of Fitzwilliam Parents: William Chaloner and Emma Harvey Married: Hon. Frances Laura Dundas Additional relatives: father-in-law Sir Thomas Dundas, 1st Baron Dundas In the financial crash of 1825, his and his partners' bank failed, bankrupting Chaloner. His wife's cousin, the Earl of Fitzwilliam, helped him secure his Gisborough estate in the aftermath. In his role as land agent for Fitzwilliam, Chaloner was involved in land clearances and the forced emigration of 'surplus' peasant families. His son took on this role after Chaloners' death in 1842. Under The Slave Compensation Act 1837, he was awarded compensation of around £6,000 with Abel Rous Dottin, John Pollard Mayers, and Henry Walker Yeoman as trustees of the marriage settlement of his sister Caroline Cumberbatch for the Cleland and Farm estates in Barbados.
