Industrialist; Landowner Career: Sheriff in Essex (1636); joined the Royalist party; was imprisoned by House of Commons (c.1642); Colonel within the Royalist army (c. 1644); imprisoned with other Cavaliers (1655) Honours: Kt 1638 Baron 1645 Parents: Sir Thomas Lucas (c.1573-1625) and Elizabeth Leighton (d.1647) Siblings: Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle upon Tyne; Sir Charles Lucas Married: Anne Nevill Children: only surviving child Baroness Lucas of Crudwell (Mary Grey, Countess of Kent) Lucas was vocal in his support for Charles I, which scholars theorise led to his house being being attacked and plundered in 1642. Through the history of the Lucas family's wealth, there was additionally a continuous conflict within the abbey in St John's near Colchester. Lucas' success as Sheriff in collecting ship money tax earned him favour with the king, although it increased animosity with puritan and parlimentarian leaders and allies in the region. His brother, Sir Charles Lucas, was executed in the aftermath of the 1648 siege of Colchester, which John Lucas himself was not involved in. In 1671, a copy of the speech he had held against a subsidy being granted to Charles II was ordered to be burnt. BR says he was expelled 29 Oct 1666 (Hunter also says 1666), but no evidence in Birch. Hunter states that he was proposed for election on 26 Dec 1660.
