Lepidopterist, entomologist, and ornithologist Zoology Biology Entomology Ornithology Education: Eton College (1844-1847); privately educated at home owing to ill health; Trinity College, Cambridge (1853) Career: Inherited a fortune enabling him to travel extensively around the world, developing a passion for natural history (1857-1885); Trustee, British Museum; keen collector of early Iranian pottery, Iznik pottery and Hispano-Moresque ware. Memberships: FLS; FGS; MES; ZSL Parents: Joseph Godman and Caroline Smith. Spouse: 1) Edith Mary, sister of Henry John Elwes (FRS 1897) (she died 1875); 2) Alice Mary, daughter of Major Percy Chaplin Distinguished by his researches into the Fauna of Central America, the exploration of which he commenced when travelling in that country in the year 1864. In conjunction with Mr Salvin, he originated the "Biologia Centrali-Americana" which is in course of publication and to which he himself contributes portions relating to the Birds and Lepidoptera. Promoted the progress of biological science in all its branches. commemorated in the scientific names of four species of reptiles: Anolis godmani (a synonym of Anolis limifrons), Cerrophidion godmani, Rhadinella godmani, Thamnophis godmani; one amphibian, Godman's tree frog (Tlalocohyla godmani);[20] and a heliconiine butterfly, Heliconius godmani. One of the twenty founding members of the British Ornithologists' Union. Donated some examples of Islamic pottery to the British Museum during his lifetime and bequeathed to the Museum one of the most extensive private collections of ceramics from the Middle East and Spain.
