This connection to the church as well as his background in legal studies enabled him to quickly rise through ecclesiastical ranks. He was in regular correspondence with Christiaan Huygens (FRS 1663), Blaise Pascal, and John Wallis (FRS 1663). He wrote to Huygens, for example, about integrating the cissoid. Slusius and Isaac Newton (FRS 1672) both found solutions to finding tangents independently from each other. Similarly, he solved Alhazen's problem around the same time as Hugyens. Pascal named the 'Pearls of Sluze' after him.
