His skills as a naval administrator were well-regarded amongst his peers and he was favoured at court. He also enjoyed a reputation as a collector, as well as a patron of the arts and sciences, such as for John Locke. He purchased a substantial part of the collections at Wilton House, including the Arundel marbles.
