Physician Natural history Education: School at Manchester; Brasenose College, Oxford (BA 1683); Jesus College, Cambridge (MD Com. Reg. 1690) Career: Practised in London and later in Manchester Parents: William Leigh Married: Dorothy Shuttleworth Unfortunately, fairly little is known about Leigh's family background or his medical practice in London and Manchester. His writings show an interest in the medicine as well as natural history and the plant 'Leighia cass' is named after Leigh himself, as a synonym for the helianthus, a genus from the family more commonly known as sunflowers. It is possible that Leigh is the physician Dr Lee, who features frequently in the diaries of Thomas Bellingham and Lawrence Rawstorne. Despite occasional corresponence, he remained largely inactive in the Royal Society and was never in its printed lists.
