He proceeded to write on his observations of the Eastern Mediterranean. He was deprived of his fellowship as an 'anti-papist' in 1688 and it was removed fully in 1692 despite a temporary reinstatement as Smith refused to subscribe the oaths to William III and Mary II. Upon his death, he left diarist Thomas Hearne a number of books and papers, some of which then came to the Bodleian Library following Hearne's death in 1735. He was not particularly active in the Royal Society after his admission.
