Physician and travel writer Education: Trinity College, Cambridge; transferred himself to Pembroke College. MB per literas regias (1671); MD (1683); Incorporated at Oxford (1683) Career: Left from Gravesend on a tour to India, in the interests of the HEIC (1672); returned to England (1682); published an account of his travels (1698) Parents: William Fryer of London Spouse: married a niece of Rose Desborough, wife of Samuel Desborough Children: Anna Maria Sanderson Best remembered for his descriptions of travel in Persia and India, with accurate observations in geology, meteorology, and natural history. It is likely that his family had connections with the British East India Company, a Court Minute of the Company, dated 11 September 1672, records his appointment as “a Chyrurgeon for Surat” and a subsequent letter provides details of his remuneration at “50s. per month to commence at his arriveall” (Fryer, 1909-15, I, p. xiii).
